Bookkeeping Myths, Part 1: Nonsense about Accuracy

Myth #1: Reconciling is unnecessary.

❌ “Bank feeds take care of it!”

✅ Facts: Humans make mistakes. Technology fails. Reconciling your accounts to your bank statements is perhaps THE most important step to ensure that your numbers are accurate. (See my post about reconciling!)

Myth #2: Bank feeds are good to go.

❌ “My software takes care of that.”

✅ Facts: Bank feeds are wonderful. But they get disconnected, duplicate or skip transactions, and pull in questionable info. Human review and verification against your bank statements is a must.

Myth #2: Software makes it easy.

❌ “But I connected QuickBooks!”

✅ Facts: Your bookkeeping software is a tool. Like any tool, it takes time to learn to use it effectively, and to understand the “why” behind its functions--no matter what the ads say.
